Power Analysis + Coaching

Kym’s a badass, and she upped my cool factor.

I chose Coach Kym because we had a conversation and it was clear we have a great dynamic. We were friends first, so I already knew I liked her coaching style.

But if I was telling somebody else why to choose her, the words that come to mind are probably the same ones people would use to describe me: no nonsense, straight talking, very experienced, with an extensive background in lots of different arenas, so she’s able to apply things.

And the confidence and certainty she brings when she walks in is something I wanted for myself. Who Kym is as a person is aspirational. Wouldn’t it be nice for me to have the confidence of a Nike dancer?

When I started, I was watching people who were less qualified than me, but better at marketing, get the jobs I should have got and the clients I should be serving.

Looking back now, I was also trying to be everything to everyone. I was working out how to take the thing I’m best at and turn it into multiple tiered levels that were palatable to everybody at every level of business, instead of standing behind the thing I’m best at and saying, this is how I work with people.

What’s changed is we’ve gone: what am I the best at? Where am I planting my flag?

I refuse to be everything to everyone. If you want to work with me, this is the way it happens.

I don’t think we’ve had one giant aha moment. It’s not like I suddenly realised that if I just believe in myself, I can manifest $500 million. It’s been a series of consistent little ahas, each matched with the next action.

Like realising cold outreach isn’t me going, “Hey, buy my thing, buy my thing, buy my thing.” It’s, “Hey, we’re in the same space. Maybe we should be connected.”

Watching Kym’s brain work is interesting too. She’ll say something like, “Well, I would just walk in and be like, hi, we’re going to be best friends, nice to meet you.” That’s not my natural standpoint, so it’s interesting to see that’s how some people operate.

Maybe the aha is me deciding this is the thing I want to do, we’re going to plant a flag in it, and that’s all we’re going to do.

I feel a lot more certain in my ability now. Being able to own what I do when I’m speaking to someone else is giant.

And there’s a recognition that what I do is an unusual skill-set, and a valuable one, and that the problem isn’t me.

What’s exceeded my expectations is the level of access and support. I know that I can contact Kym and I’ll hear back within 24 hours. I know that if things go wrong, she’ll clear a path and get on a Zoom with me.

And she supports more than the thing we’re working on. She’ll sit in it with me when something else is going on, like a difficult client.

That kind of access to a coach isn’t something you see a lot. Usually it’s a weekly call and Voxer access in between, and it still takes a while to get a response. With Kym, I feel very connected.

It’s exceeded my expectations, but knowing her, it doesn’t surprise me.

If you’ve never been coached, you’re probably thinking of therapy. Kym’s coaching is a mix.

There’s the hard-hitting Coach Kym who’ll turn up in your WhatsApp or your inbox and tell you how it is when you need it.

And there’s a large consulting piece. A lot of it is practical: “Okay, let’s try this. What about this thing? Could we say it this way? Yes, I’ve read the sales page. I don’t know what this line means.”

So think of it as having someone in your corner you can talk to about what’s going on in your business, who’ll reflect back what they’re seeing and show you where you might be getting in your own way, combined with a consultant who can look at your business and say, this is what I would do next.

To get the most out of it, you need your expertise dialled in. You can’t be a baby business owner who’s never done anything. You can be a baby business owner who’s had a 30-year corporate career, but you need to be able to say, this is what I’m an expert in, so Kym can build around that.

You’ll also need to put your hand up. Kym will always check in if she knows you’re having a hard week, or if she hasn’t heard from you in a couple of weeks, but a lot of the support comes from you saying, I need help, what do you think of this, here’s what’s happening.

Don’t be afraid to ask, because you’re going to get it.

You’ll need determination, and if you’re already an expert at something, you’ve already shown that. You just need to turn it in a different direction.

And you need to trust that even though you’re the expert in what you do, you might not be the expert in everything else, so you can trust another expert like Kym.

The word I’d use is coachable, but that’s useless to someone who’s never been coached. Most people have been in a sports team, though. A coach in business is basically the same idea as a coach on the field, just in a different circumstance.

My concern with any coach is always: can this person actually do what they say they’re going to do? Am I going to shell out a bunch of money for no results? I’ve spent a lot of money on coaches and programs before.

With Kym that wasn’t a concern, because I’ve known her a long time. But even if I was meeting her cold, she has a diverse background.

Honestly, I’d be surprised if anyone is on the fence once they’ve met Kym.

If you are, my guess is it’s less about her and more about something you need to work on. Which is even more of a reason to say yes.
